The existing site’s features including the mature boundary help to integrate the design into its setting. The principle of the design is to create a floor plan that responds to the site (views, road, protected structures and designed landscape etc.) and the solar orientation. Therefore, the plan has been designed to ensure the social spaces (living accommodation) achieve maximum levels of sun light and benefits from the site’s southern orientation, while at the same time keeping the dwelling low in the landscape to reduce its visual impact.
The proposed dwelling is based on a L-shape arrangement which creates a sheltered external space and a natural entrance forecourt at the front. The external paved area is positioned on the south, west and east side of the dwelling with the house itself opening onto these spaces and achieving good connections with the garden. The kitchen and living room is positioned at the rear and on the west side of the site where the ground level is higher, to benefit from the views and to work with the existing site’s topography. The bedrooms are positioned in the north block.
