The site’s location and existing characteristics offer several unique features which have contributed to the development of the proposed design.
Gravel Walk is an established and underutilised pedestrian link between Georgian Close and George’s Street/Drogheda town centre. This link provides a unique opportunity for residential and public realm development. The clients desire to create quality residential units at this location, regenerating the area, along with the opportunities presented by the site and context become the drivers behind the design.
A new residential building along this pedestrian route will generate a new public realm – activating, enhancing and extending the recreational space to the north adjoining Georgian Close. A new residential building will also provide passive surveillance along this
route ensuring a quality environment for the residents of the proposed new development along with the residents of Georgian Close.
These ideas manifested in the creation of a new street ‘edge’ which will address Gravel Walk activating a new social/public realm. Several distinct forms generate a new street edge, thus activating an existing pedestrian route whilst simultaneously creating a new public space in the centre of Drogheda.
The urban context has also influenced the style of expression, giving rise to a building form and material choice which is to be interpreted as a traditional classic with a contemporary twist.
