We were recently delighted to receive planning permission for a new single-storey extension at Sandpit National School. This exciting project will provide a dedicated Special Educational Needs (SEN) base designed to support students in a welcoming, inclusive and carefully considered learning environment.
The proposed extension will include two new classrooms along with a range of specialised spaces tailored to support a variety of learning needs. These will include two quiet spaces for focused or restorative time, a central activities space that encourages interaction and movement, and a multi-activity room that can accommodate a range of learning and therapeutic activities. The design also incorporates a daily living skills room to help students develop important practical life skills, alongside office space and ancillary accommodation to support staff and the day-to-day operation of the facility.
Beyond the building itself, the project also places a strong emphasis on the outdoor environment. A soft play area and sensory garden are proposed to create safe and stimulating outdoor spaces that encourage exploration, relaxation and sensory engagement. In addition, six new parking spaces will be provided to improve accessibility and support the operation of the new SEN base.
Projects like this are particularly rewarding as they demonstrate how thoughtful architectural design can play a meaningful role in supporting education and inclusion. We look forward to seeing the project progress and to continuing our work with the school as this important new facility moves towards construction.
