We recently welcomed Geberit to our office for an insightful CPD session focused on Sensory Spaces and how thoughtful bathroom design can positively influence wellbeing. Drawing on the principles behind Geberit’s Science Behind the Sensory Space programme, the session explored how spaces traditionally viewed as purely functional can become calm, restorative environments.
The CPD highlighted the importance of engaging the senses - sound, light, touch and smell - in design. From reducing unwanted noise through acoustic planning, to softer lighting strategies, improved air quality and tactile materials, small design decisions can significantly enhance user comfort and experience. Rather than masking issues, sensory design encourages addressing them at source to create more balanced and pleasant spaces.
A key takeaway was that sensory design applies across all sectors, from residential and workplace environments to hospitality projects, aligning closely with biophilic and wellbeing-focused design principles. Overall, the session reinforced the growing role of human-centred design in architecture, and how even everyday spaces like bathrooms can be transformed into meaningful sensory sanctuaries.
