A total renovation in every sense. The original red brick house was built in the 1990s and was very much of its time. Sitting on a large hidden site like an oasis in its urban context the house is flanked by large green lawns and established trees. As part of the remodel and refurbishment the original structure was stripped right back to the proverbial four walls. By merging the old rooms to the rear of the ground floor and extending out into the garden a large bright open plan area is formed. A wall of glass that opens out onto the granite patio is accessed through a floor to ceiling height split sliding door. The patio is part covered by a cantilevered canopy that provides solar shading from the direct southwest sunlight and also creates a sheltered outdoor sitting area. The strong horizontal line of the flat-roofed overhang gives a striking contemporary appearance. A new sitting room has a vaulted ceiling and benefits from a clerestory window that externally appears as a zinc-clad triangular pop-up roof form. The former attic is converted into a library & chill-out area which is at the top of an open-riser staircase that comprises of steel frame, walnut steps, and glass balustrade. Materials throughout the house very thoughtfully considered and contribute richly to the overall finish; Italian kitchen, Danish windows, Belgian door system, etc. The end product is a fantastic example of a complete transformation from a conventional house to a bright spacious high-efficiency contemporary dwelling.
