Meet the Team: Trevor Byrne

In the continued series of posts that are introducing the individuals that make up the team at McKevitt King Architects I would like to introduce myself.

My name is Trevor Byrne and I am one of the architectural technologists here at McKevitt King. Yet another native of Drogheda, I first walked under the archway into what was McKevitt Architects back in 2005 (wow 15 years ago!!!). At that time I was a 2nd year student studying Architectural Technology in Dublin Institute of Technology.

By chance at the time one my friends was working with McKevitt Architects and he recommended dropping a CV into the office, which I did, and I’ve never looked back. Every day is both exciting and challenging, I love the variety of work, being part of a great team, being responsible for drafting sketches & designs handed down from the architects, helping with surveys and the administration of ongoing projects. Every day is extremely different and I get great personal satisfaction when I pass by a building that I can proudly say I contributed to during both the design and the construction phases.

Growing up I always had a keen interest in construction playing with Lego sets from a young age and helping my granddad with various DIY projects. In secondary school I worked summer jobs with local carpenters before I got my first architectural work experience with Elliott, Maguire & Landers based in Dublin working on commercial fit-outs, I loved getting to explore the buildings that many people walk by every day and never get to see inside. From there I moved on and worked with Abbi & Associates based here in Drogheda before starting with McKevitt Architects.

In 2013 as construction work around the country started to slow down I took the opportunity to work with a fire engineering company, Eamon O’ Boyle & Associates, based in Dublin for a year. This sparked a new interest that I have continued to follow, returning to education in 2018 and I’m currently studying Fire Engineering at the University of Ulster with the support and encouragement of team at McKevitt King Architects.

I currently work alongside highly talented architects and technologists in the office as well as an extended network of engineers, builders and consultants. Although a lot of my work is office based,  where I keep myself busy drafting at my desk, I’m lucky enough to get out of the office every now and again to complete site inspections and surveys. I love when I get to complete these during the summer months as it gives me an opportunity to work outdoors in the fresh air and enjoy the sun. Although getting drenched in the winter months does make you appreciate the warm cosy atmosphere of the office.

Outside of work and study I love to travel and whether it’s a short city break, working holidays in the USA or travelling around Africa I have got to see and explore a lot of countries and indulge in their cultures. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, the holidays this year are cancelled but this has given me more time to practice my archery skills and get out walking where I have discovered many hidden gems on my doorstep.
